Each adult seeking help is assigned to a trained tutor. The student and tutor work together an average of one hour twice a week at a location convenient for them both. The basis of instruction is the Laubach method, the most widely used system of teaching reading and English as a second language. This simplified method uses phonics in association with visual aids. The carefully controlled vocabulary in the lessons is supplemented by additional materials at various reading levels. Practical skills are a part of each lesson. Some students, especially those available in the evenings, are assigned to group classes with a trained ESOL teacher. The language instruction in these classes centers around practical skills.
