What happens when adults in our community learn English?

They get better jobs: Abel and Andres have been busers for almost a year, but have now been promoted to servers at the local dinner theater.

They do better on the job: Rosa was surprised when the boss complemented her on her improved English. Martin was given a bonus!

They help their children in school: they can talk to the teachers, they can help with assignments. Sonia from the Family Literacy Program is so proud of her daughter because of her improved grades at school. Another Family Literacy Program parent, Sylvia, who at first could not understand when someone asked her the time, is beginning to understand how to put sentences together in English. However, Sylvia says her best reward is that her son now loves to read and has earned all A’s on his report card.

They start businesses: Juan Carlos and Sandra have started a landscaping business. Margarita has opened an alterations business and already has many clients. One student from several years ago has just opened his fourth restaurant in SW Florida.

They become integrated into the community: Amparo and Sylvia proudly became US citizens this year.

Adults understand very well that they are in a vulnerable position if they don’t speak English. They get cheated easily. Their talents and skills are useless—to themselves and to the community, like the young man who scrubs floors at McDonald’s—he’s trained as an electrical engineer in his home country.

English—for you, for me, for our community
