When I came for the first time to the USA, I saw the country different from the city where I was born because this is a rich world and my country needs investment, more money, and industry. Some parents told Dora why they liked the family literacy programs.

To me it is easier to learn with a tutor. When I study by myself, I don’t do as much work as when I have a tutor. I want to take advantage of this program, for my own self- improvement and learning. –Juana Rivera.

I like my tutor, If I don’t understand something, I just ask my tutor right away. –Juana Morales.

I knew I had to try very hard to get to my goals, but I know that I couldn’t do without my tutors help. The program has been a great benefit to me, but I feel that I could have had more, if there had not been so many changes in my group, from tutors and students. I did not attend class when either the tutor repeated to the class for student who did nothing but to attend the class or begin again with another tutor that it wasn’t easy to get used to. We all started at the same level, but I used to make extra homework like library visits, reading to my children at home, review my books etc. I commented to my classmates that I was disappointed because they were not doing the extra work that I was doing and by their fault we were repeating the same lesson again and again and I suggested that they needed to make extra work not just come to class. The good thing that happened to me was that I was moved to another level and I felt that I fitted perfect in that level. I had better opportunity to learn English with the new tutor who was excellent. –Aurora Loredo

I previously was in other programs to learn English, but definitively I remain with this because it is for the family and I don’t have to worry where I am going to leave my children while I learn English because they are in the same program improving their reading skills. In addition, the groups are small and that way we all learn more. –Elizabeth Arias.

I keep going because learning will lead to a better life and job. –Jorge Monge.

I try to figure out what is in the newspaper or books or packages by trying to interpret the pictures. I don’t want to do that anymore. I want to be able to read the words. I know that makes all the difference in the world. I’m sure that in this program I’m going to get my goal. –Jorge Arias.

Now I know what “Fire Exit” means. I never attended school in my country that is the reason that I take too long to learn. But I don’t give up. I’m going to try it again and again. I attended the program with just one purpose: to learn English and to offer to my children a different life than I have had and an education for them that I did not have. My job is to cut grass with a big, heavy machine. Everyday when I get home I’m so tired. I wish to have a better job and to have time to go to the park and not deny to playing with my children because of the fatigue. –Gladys Lopez
